2018 MetroWest Champions - Metrowest Royals

(Northborough, Mass.) The Metrowest Royals entered the 2018 post-season as the #4 seed but finished as champions after sweeping the Northborough Phillies 8-0 and 7-2 in the 2018 Boston Men's Baseball League MetroWest Division Championship Series on Sunday afternoon. The Championship is the third for the Royals since 2013 and it comes off an impressive 6-1 run through the tournament. They defeated the #5 seed Marlboro Twins in two games, gutted out a 2-1 series win over the #1 seed Framingham Orioles and then capped off their championship run with a series win over the #3 seed Northborough Phillies.

Game One: Metrowest Royals 8, Northborough Phillies 0 (Final)

Christopher Dion spun a complete game shutout to guide the Royals to an opening win. The left-hander allowed just five hits over his seven innings of work while striking out nine and issuing just one walk.

The Royals gifted Dion an early three-run lead as they struck in the top of the first off Phillies starter Al Robillard. With two outs and runners on second and third, Kevin Lyons delivered the key hit with a 2-RBI double into the right-center gap. The next hitter, Jay Hussey then dropped one into shallow left field which allowed Lyons to scamper home to account for the scoring.

The Phillies responded by loading the bases with one out in the second inning. However Dion was able to get Chris Jarvis to pop up to short and then struck out Jeff Polinski to end the only threat that he had to face.

Robillard settled down and kept the Royal offense in check until the 7th inning. A RBI double from Stephen Robb followed by RBI singles from Anthony Perry and Jay Thomas would give the Royals enough insurance runs to win the game.

Robb finished the opener going 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and Perry went a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Hussey was the other Royal to have a multi-hit game as he went 2-for- 4.

Game Two: Metrowest Royals 7, Northborough Phillies 2 (Final)

After a rough first inning, Ian Pierce was able to settle into a groove to get through five innings as the Royals went on to win their second championship in three years.

The Phillies loaded the bases in the top of the first with one out and capitalized immediately. Robillard singled which plated Joe Loynd and then Erik DiGuilio smack a sharp single through the left side to score Mike Escolas for the early 2-0 lead. The Royals didn't back down as they scratched out a run in the bottom of the first of right-hander Graham Gaudette. Thomas lifted a deep fly ball to right field that allowed Robb to tag and score to cut the lead in half.

Two innings later, Lyons drove in the tying run after being hit by the pitch with the bases loaded and Hussey gave the Royals the lead with a two-RBI single to make it 5-2. That would be all Pierce would need as he struck out seven of the final nine batters he faced before handing the ball over to Dion to close it out. Pierce finished with 5 innings pitched allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits while retiring 10 by way of the K and issuing just two walks. Dion was credited with the save and struck out three over two innings of work.

Perry went 2-for-2 with two runs scored to finish the series a perfect 5-for-5 and earned Co-MVP honors with Dion. Hussey also recorded another two-hit ballgame and Miguel Gonzalez checked in with a 2-for-3, RBI performance.

Congratulations to the Northborough Phillies on their first Finals' appearance in the BMBL era and to the Metrowest Royals - your 2018 MetroWest Division Champions!
